Unfortunately, a number of big delays (Breath of the Wild naked link 2 and Starfield among them) took some of the wind out of this year’s sails. Yet even with those setbacks, there were 77 games released in 2022 that IGN awarded a review score of 8 or higher. The number of times I snuck up behind an enemy, and reached out to grab and silently choke him out, but accidentally punched him in the head and alerted his friends instead was, to be frank, too high by a lot.

This doesn’t make Avowed bad—I loved it—but it’s symptomatic of one area where it falls short compared to its contemporaries, not to mention the first-person Bethesda games it’s clearly modelled on. I can’t attack anyone at will and suffer the consequences (though the narrative stages ample opportunities for me to kill or have mercy). Likewise, while stealth is an option, it’s usually just a means to get an upper hand on a particular foe. Once I’ve attacked—whether from cover or using an invisibility spell—every baddie in the vicinity knows I’m there. But while this is a very good game, with time I came to understand that its ambitions are a touch more humble than some recent genre heavyweights. I realised that it might be more flattering to think of Avowed as a choice-based narrative-driven action game.

After just a little time with Rematch, I’m already totally hooked. Instead, To a T is about asking serious questions in a silly voice. These are questions raised in the game’s first minutes (through a song-and-dance routine that also includes barking humans, no less) and explored over the course of five hours. After those hours are up, you may have some answers to those questions. You may instead leave only with mastery over diagonal sandwich speed-eating, or a lingering impression that trains are very cool. Switch Game Reviews

The frame rate is uneven and while this isn’t a straight action game there’s a constant sense that it’s only barely managing to work on the Switch 2. The occasionally blurry visuals are also less impressive than other launch ports and while some of that may be fixed with a patch, it’s clear this is a fairly compromised port. Switch 2 still seems the least appropriate console for a fighting game, given the Joy-Cons have no D-pad and we don’t think there’s a fighting stick for it yet, but beyond that this really has no drawbacks. There’s the question of whether Capcom will give it exactly the same support as the other version but it’s already got the current DLC available for it, so hopefully that means they’re not just going to abandon it after launch. Their reviews help gamers understand a game’s good and bad points.

Squeakross: Home Squeak Home Review – My New Favourite Picross Game

You can technically build a shelter almost anywhere you’d like, and with the speed at which items respawn, plopping down your possessions in open sand is an obvious no-go. On one occasion, while taking out a duo of scavengers, the firing stopped abruptly mid-fight. As I sheepishly wandered around the corner, I noticed that the second scavenger was standing frozen, as if they’d forgotten I was there.

The Switch 2’s Joy-Con 2 controllers simply feel like larger versions of the original ones on the first-gen Switch. Nintendo’s new console is thin and light, and if you don’t like the feel of it digging into your palms, you need to consider other accessories that add more grip. The Switch 2 is a device that lends itself to handing off a controller for quick and dirty multiplayer, exemplified by Nintendo’s premier first-party title, Mario Kart World, which was the perfect launch game. We’ve played more than a dozen hours in the game with various groups of friends—all of whom were jonesing to try the ultra-hyped handheld—and they all left with smiles on their faces. The Switch 2 is running a custom Nvidia chip, and it’s ostensibly as powerful as some of Nvidia’s lower-end Ampere-era GPUs from four years ago—or about equivalent in power to consoles from the PS4 era.

Nevertheless, the year began with a literal deluge of great games before the noticeable summer pause. The main website has character sheets, printable cards, game play aids and even a preview of upcoming classes. Making characters with the Daggerheart Nexus was easy and it was a great resource during play. Characters are built using classic elements from role playing games.

However, Star Wars Outlaws essentially delivers a Han Solo-like experience in both good and bad ways; it has some handsome looks and a strong sense of adventure, but it’s also somewhat scruffy around the edges and is liable to let you down from time to time. Some names shine as leaders in top video game review sites. They give detailed reviews and insights into gameplay, visuals, and fun.

2024 was a good year for popular game series making big returns. Tekken 8 kicked off the year — literally — with its newest installment, which we called an “incredible evolution for the series” thanks to some interesting changes made to the classic 3D fighter that breathes new life into the classic combat. Arrowhead Game Studios’ fun and hilarious shooter was the big breakout hit of the year, quickly enlisting millions of new recruits for its galactic space war. Even though it stumbled with some recent updates, it remains a massively popular game and PlayStation’s big live-service win of the year.

Nobunaga’s Ambition is a long (incredibly long – it started out on PC in 1983) running series of grand strategy games, most of which weren’t released in the West until quite recently. We don’t know how this one is but it has a Metacritic score of 81. Hitman has long been one of the best examples of sandbox gameplay in a mainstream video game, where you learn to exploit every inch of a level, and the characters within it, to complete your mission in increasingly unlikely ways. It’s also notable for having the same online features as the other versions, including cross-play, and the ability to GameShare with the Switch 1.

That’s a big achievement for a launch game, especially as it supports rollback netcode and cross-play. The latter is vitally important in terms of ensuring a steady supply of opponents and while Nintendo’s online infrastructure won’t be put to the test until there are more Switch 2 owners in the world, it seems to work fine right now. Apart from being one of the best games of the year – and one of the best co-op games of all time – the Switch 2 version of Split Fiction is very instructive in terms of what should be expected of third party ports in general. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle grabs the hearts of fans of the famous archaeologist from the very first minutes. However, MachineGames’ game falls a little below expectations. It sits on the border of an action game and an adventure game.
